These properties are per EN 1982 alloy CC496K for sand castings. They are also acceptable for centrifugal and permanent mold castings made to meet this specification.
Minimum hardness = 55 HB at 500 kg.
Casting sections and surfaces critical for strength and finish shall be free of shrinkage, cracks, porosity, blowholes, hot tears which will be detrimental to use of the finished casting.
Runners, risers, fins and other cast-on pieces shall be removed and dressed down to blend with the normal profile of the casting surfaces.
Repair of defects shall be perform per Sections 8 and 9 of this Material Standard.
Declaration that castings meet all requirements stated herein and in purchase orders.
Test bars shall be supplied per ASTM B 584 and B 208, as well as any additional test bars specified on the customer's purchase orders.
Individual serial number or melting charge number
Country of origin (Made in …..) 25 mm (1 inch) high
The location of identification markings shall be on the casting drawings.
The supplier shall maintain records to connect individual castings (Drawing Number and Individual Identification Number) to,
Individual melting batch and its analysis
Major Defect (Definition) - For this Specification, a Major Defect is defined as a single defect or a cluster of defects which when taken as a whole is detrimental to design, strength, lifetime, surface finish or intended end use of the casting.
Casting defects which exceed the limitations described in Section 9 below shall be considered Major Defects.
If the defect limitations in Section 9 are exceeded, the casting vendor at his option shall either scrap the defective casting or submit a request to repair per the first paragraph in this Section.
9.1 Total defects in a casting shall not exceed one percent (1%) of the area of the complete casting surface area.
Total defects within any 144 sq. in. (929 sq. cm.) casting surface area shall not exceed two percent (2%) of that area.
9.2 Pin Holes (Porosity) - Pin holes less than .063 in. (1.6 mm) diameter do not have to be repaired, unless the area of the perimeter enclosing all pin holes in a surface exceeds one percent (1%) of the total area of that surface, or the defective area will not successfully pass a pressure test, if pressure testing is a requirement. Castings not meeting these requirements shall be subject to the Repair provisions in Section 8 above.
9.3 Blow Holes - Castings having blow holes with diameters greater than .38 in. (9.6 mm) shall be rejected and be subject to the Repair provisions in Section 8.0 above.
The accumulated area of all blowholes on a single (rough or machined) surface of the casting shall not exceed 0.8 percent (0.8%) of that surface area.
The maximum number of blowholes permitted within any 144 sq. in. (929 sq. cm) surface area shall not exceed 20. The variation of size and quantity is limited as follows:
Maximum Diameter in. (cm) | Maximum Quantity/Diameter |
.38 (9.6) | 5 |
.25 (6.4) | 10 |
.13 (3.3) | 15 |
.063 (1.6) | 20 |
In rough surfaces which will not be machined, blowholes less than .13 in. (3.3 mm) diameter will not require repair except for cosmetic purposes.
In rough surfaces which will not be machined, blowholes from .13 in. (3.3 mm) to .38 in. (9.6 mm) diameter inclusive shall be repaired by a customer approved process.
In machined bearing surfaces, blowholes shall be thoroughly cleaned of inclusions and dirt, filled with babbit or other approved material, and made flush with the machined surface.
9.4 Cracks - Cracks on any bearing surfaces or cracks on any surface which will contribute to strength reduction in any section of the casting shall be rejected, and the casting shall be subject to the Repair provisions in Section 8 above.
Cracks which appear on non-critical surfaces and which are not detrimental to the strength of the casting shall be repaired by welding.
